CEO JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Kilted Otter Initiative (SCIO) purposes are:

Activities in furtherance the advancement of education

The advancement of the arts, heritage, culture, or science which will include the following

a)     Promote Gaelic and other Indigenous languages and cultures.

b)    Educate on Gaelic and other Indigenous languages and cultures.

c)     Use video game jams and creative industry approaches as tools of education and promotion.

d)    Support authentic representation of Gaelic and other Indigenous languages and cultures within the creative industries.

e)    Research and analyse effects of KOI methods and approaches.

f)      Disseminate good practice for representations of Gaelic and other Indigenous languages and cultures.

The Kilted Otter Initiative proposes to establish outcomes in two main areas:

1.     Indigenous Language and Heritage Preservation

2.     Digital Gaming Education


The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) will lead the charity and oversee all aspects of its practical operations. The CEO will actualise the vision of the Board at the direction of the Management Committee. in agreement with Management Committee, the CEO will hire employees and contractors and purchase materials required to effectively execute the business of the charity The CEO will maintain records and files require by OSCR, Scottish and UK law. The CEO will produce a yearly report that is minimally to include:

      Funding sources

      Activity review

      Financial review

 

The CEO will work with Indigenous knowledge holders, industry professionals, and academics to help promote Scottish culture and heritage through digital engagement in the form of extended, research based, game jams.

 

It is to be understood that as KOI grows and matures that the duties of the CEO will adjust accordingly to meet the needs of the charity.

Education / Qualifications

Bachelors in appropriate subject area (education, cultural studies, digital game design, etc).

Secondary and/or higher education teaching qualification or equivalent experience appropriate to the discipline.

Masters or PhD in in appropriate subject area (education, cultural studies, digital game design, etc).

 

 

Knowledge and Experience

Experience of, and specialist knowledge in one of the following: project management, company management, people management.

 

Report and/or research writing and/or knowledge exchange, and effective dissemination at national/international level.

A growing sphere of influence internally and externally to current organisation, in area of expertise.

Record of effective active citizenship in one’s current or previous employment.

Previous professional experience in a related area.

 

Experience of Quality Assurance and Quality Enhancement systems

Experience of programme leadership and development.

 

Evidence of income generation, from research and/or knowledge exchange activities.

 

 

All KOI employees need to demonstrate the following competencies:

Effective Communication

Definition: The use of appropriate communications media and methods, to convey, explain or discuss information in a manner that is clear and accurate for the target audience.

Expected level: Understand and routinely convey complex conceptual ideas and complex information, which may be highly detailed, technical or specialist, using a range of media, to students, peers and external specialists.  Disseminate conceptual and complex ideas to a variety of audiences including non-specialists.

Liaison and Networking

Definition:  Active participation in, contribution to or leadership of internal/external networks which build positive relationships and promote collaborative/inter-disciplinary working.

Expected level: Participate in networks both within the organisation and externally, in order to ensure input, and dissemination, of information in the right format to the right people at the right time; build relationships and contacts internally and externally to facilitate future exchange of information.

Initiative and Problem Solving

Definition:  Showing desire for continuous improvement in individual and team performance by actively contributing to problem solving and responding positively to opportunities for development.

Expected level: Use initiative and creativity to resolve complex problems where the optimal solution may not be immediately apparent.  The person should adopt a systematic approach to consideration of all the facets of a problem in determining a solution.

Research, Knowledge Exchange and Professional Practice

Definition:  The use and/or design of appropriate methods to actively engage in research and scholarly activities to investigate issues, analyse information and disseminate knowledge in a particular field of specialism.

Expected level: Develop and design innovative teaching, outreach, research, knowledge exchange, professional practice and / or consultancy projects and submit proposals to secure funding.  Conduct, contribute, collaborate in these projects and disseminate research findings through the publication of appropriate outputs (e.g. peer reviewed articles).  Engage with industry and society to undertake analysis and to translate knowledge advances in disciplinary, professional and pedagogical research as required to support research and teaching activities.

Decision Making

Definition:  Active contribution to/ leadership of decision making processes within the team which ensure objectives are achieved and quality standards are maintained.

Expected level: Make independent decisions related to the position and within the totality of KOI. Contribute to discussions with the Management Committee and work with others to reach an appropriate conclusion, providing advice or input to support the decision-making of others which has significant impact within KOI

 

6. Appointment Details

Initially, the position will be 14 hours a week. It is expected the responsibilities and scope of the position will expand and so will the required hours topped at fulltime defined as 35 hours a week. Salary will be prorated at an annual rate of £50,000 with incremental raises and inflation adjustments.

 

After a 6-week probationary period, the post will be a rolling annual contract.

 

The annual holiday entitlement is 30 days plus annual holiday closure of KOI between 22 Dec and 3 January.

 

KOI will provide access to or support a 1/60th pension scheme, or similar.

RESEARCH ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

The research assistant will support the running of the Kilted Otter Initiative, conducting research, creating research packs and generating original ideas. The RA will assist in the supervision of game and outreach events, development and evaluation of game jams, and contribute to the organisations action plans and strategy, policy and procedures.

Duties include; acting as a point of call for teachers involved in the jam, coordinating the lecture release schedule, working with the CEO to add value to the jam and bringing your own voice and experience to the role.

Must have strong organisational skills, knowledge of relevant software and flexible working hours. Conversational Gaelic is desirable. 

This is a work-from-home position. 

2 days a week. 

£77 a day.

10% employer matching pension contributions. 

Approximately 12 days holiday.
